Hybrid Hanok Model of Modern Architecture and Traditional Hanok: Design Model and Evaluation Study
Seungkwang Shon (Dongshin University)
As a traditional architecture, a Hanok has a unique characteristic that has a norm and style of architecture. In the process of rapid social development, traditional Hanok has been destroyed in Korea. However, in the modern society, Hanok is being reinterpreted as a building resource with new value by contrasting with traditional culture characteristics and environment - friendly characteristics. Nevertheless, the controversy over whether traditional Korean Hanok should keep its original form in modern society or embrace new life contents and economy is not stopped.
The purpose of this study is to define the architectural model that embraces the values of original and modern architecture as 'hybrid Hanok' and to verify the possibility by simulating the construction model. First, we investigated the case of building a compromise between Hanok and modern architecture, and made a hybrid Hanok composition model which fused Hanok and modern architecture. Second, a model composed of hybrid Hanok was simulated with four pairs of comparison models. Third, the comparative model was used to evaluate the sensitivity of the hybrid Hanok model by creating a questionnaire on the applicability of traditionality, creativity, and traditional landscape.
The results of the study show that respondents have absolutely agreed that the traditional Hanok should keep its original form. At the same time, the Hanok was very positive for the hybrid Hanok, which is a fusion of modern architecture. These results concluded that traditional Hanok is not trapped in the "traditional" architectural style, but evolves when it is harmonized with creative design. Through this study, we confirmed the possibility of hybrid Hanok as a fusion type of tradition and modern architecture presented as a research hypothesis very positively.
