Fighting the Good Fight

Amanda Renteria’s Article, “Stop Asking if Women are Electable,” was very interesting. It made me think about how women in society are still thought as less than a man. It seems that not a lot of progress has been made when it comes to women being able to lead in other ways other than the household when women have proved that they are way more capable of so much more. There is so much proof that women are so capable and able to accomplish just as much or maybe more than a man, but those facts are totally ignored. In my opinion, especially with the men that are in the political office today, the question should not be “are women electable?” All candidates, man or woman, should be looked at equally. Whether the candidate is wearing pants, or a dress should not be a factor at all.

It appears we are living in a society where women must still fight the war of injustice, discrimination, and cruelty. That women must prove way more than they should that they are capable. It just seems unfair. In my own experience, especially growing up in an environment where I was taught that men are supposed to lead, I am fighting the battle that I can also lead as well. I have a few women in my family that have beat the odds that we were raised with, that have broken the generational curse that men are supposed to lead, and I choose to follow in their example. Being a mother, a student, and having a fulltime job has shown me that I am not only capable, but strong enough to accomplish anything that I want. I can not only perform the duties that women are claimed to have or be entitled to do, I can also become the ambitious, qualified, and diligent individual that women of the past have fought to be as well. I can be successful and take on just as much and succeed. I agree that women are electable. Women can win. Women have won and will continue to prove that not only can we achieve what people in society think we cannot, we can also do a job that exceeds the opinions and thoughts that society choose to think. We are not at a standstill and should be thought of as just people with gender not being such a big factor.

Why are women still thought of as just being able to keep the household afloat when we have proven that we can do it all? What will it take for women to be equal and not less than a man?
