Cover Letter Guide by Smith College

The Smith College School for Social Work has provided an excellent guide for writing a social work-specific cover letter. It breaks down each section of a cover letter and gives a brief

description of what each section should cover on page 4. It provides one example of a social

work-specific cover letter on page 7. Read through both pages 4 and 7 and use them as a reference

when starting your cover letter. I found this information helpful because it was directly

related to social work, and it wasn’t a dense reading. Honestly, as college students, concise and

short is helpful when doing work, internship, school, life, and much more at the same time.

Willis Smith

ABC High School

XXX Street

XXXXX, NY 11XXX

Dear Mr. Willis Smith:

I am writing to apply for the Community Case Worker Position at the ABC High School posted on the Indeed website. I have a bachelor’s degree in social science and will be earning my MSW in December 2020 from CUNY York College. I want to bring to this opportunity skills to work with youth and families from diverse cultures and help youths at school, and their families overcome barriers to academic engagement. I will be able to use my bilingual skills to communicate with parents and students that only speak Spanish.

During my clinical placement at 123 High School, I provided individual and group therapy to a culturally diverse adolescent population and their families similar to yours at the ABC High School. I find more interesting about this particular age group because their social-emotional and mental health functioning is affected by their adaptation to a new environment and their success in school, relationships, and other activities as they attempt to find their place in society.

I am particular attached to the ABC High School because it is located in my community and youth attending here are part of my community. I feel identified with them because I also came to the community from another country when I was a teenager. I understand how difficult the transition could be to a new environment and find a way to adapt to a diverse community.

I have attached my resume for your review for the Community Case Worker position posted on the Indeed website. If you have difficulty opening the attachment, please contact me via email or phone at 347-555-5555.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am applying for the social worker position at the Department of Probation. I have

been working with young individuals ages 18-30 in several settings who have been in court

before and they have had committed crimes in the past or if they have been guilty of committing

a crime. I have been an intern at several settings in the field of criminal justice during my course

of studies, which will be an asset in understanding the needs of clients in the criminal justice

system and understanding the hardships the clients may be experiencing during those difficult

moments.

It is with great passion that I genuinely enjoy helping other people and my concern for their

well-being. It was indeed an amazing opportunity to communicate and network with

people in the criminal justice system and even those who were no longer in the criminal justice

system. Through my internship experiences, I have been to court before for a hearing, and I have

seen how these individuals are faced with cruelty and disrespect. Therefore, I was able to view

how the criminal justice system works and how the system treats people inhumanely. There is

more depth on my experience and skills in my resume, which I would appreciate you looking

over.

I am confident that my experiences and skill set would make me a great candidate for this position as

well as a great asset to your agency. Please give me a call at the number above to schedule an

interview at your convenience. I appreciate your consideration and look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

[Today’s Date]

Dear [Hiring Manager’s Name],

I’m excited to apply for your newly announced social worker position as advertised on [CompanyName]. I’m confident I would be an ideal candidate for this job opening.

Still, I am looking for a social worker once completing my degree with ten years of working experience with foster care and the domestic violence population. I believe I have the qualifications required for this position. Further, I believe my work record shows that I have a history of helping disadvantaged populations by combining compassion along with proven strategies.

I am currently working on my bachelor’s in Social Work with a minor in sociology, with an estimated graduation date of May 2021. As part of my course work, I completed a 400-hour internship with XXX agency.

Thank you for taking the time to consider my candidacy. I look forward to meeting you and discussing how I can contribute to [Company Name] ’s. You may contact me at 347-555-555 or youremail@gmail.com to arrange an interview.

Dear [Dr., Mr., Mrs., Ms.] :

I came across your job listing on Indeed needing a case manager to work within the foster care system, and I believe I would make a perfect candidate for the position. I have always been passionate about working with children; this has been a lifelong dream. Your company strives to protect the well-being of children, and this philosophy matches perfectly with my values. I believe I am an empathetic, caring, and hardworking individual who will strive for greatness within your company.

I am the perfect candidate for this position because I have had the opportunity to work in two foster care agencies during my college career. The first agency where I interned was Gem Children’s Services. I worked and assisted in the home finding department. During my semester at Gem Children’s Services, I learned many child welfare policies and the administrative portion of the work. The second agency I interned at was ABC Agency; at this establishment, I learned the ins and outs of foster care. Such as visitations between the foster parents and parents, a unanimous goal of possible reunification with parents, and shadowed many Family Team Conferences.

My expected graduation date is May 2021, with a bachelor’s in social work. I have also attached my resume alongside my cover letter. I look forward to hearing from you soon, and I hope you consider me during the hiring process. If you would like to follow up regarding my application, I can be reached via telephone at 917-555-5555 or through email at youremail@gmail.com Thank you once again.

Sincerely,
