Generation Mental Trauma Effect

Julie

Introduction: Disney has been releasing many movies throughout the years. It seems that they are also bringing more movies with related topics that have been going on in our current livelihood. Such as family, friendship, self-identity, morals, etc. What I would like to present for this research about psychological topics in regard to one movie called Encanto.

Context: As mentioned before, the movie that Disney created is Encanto. In 2021, Disney released a movie, Encanto, which became very popular afterward and seems to become a topic when it comes to mental health that's been implied in the movie.

Literature Review: One of the things I noticed in the movie was major perfectionism and family expectations/ideal image. As well as generation trauma.

Research Q’s:

Methods: Throughout this research progress, I’ve watched a video about a therapist watching the movie while commenting on every detail throughout the movie. Every detail that the movie brings was discussed thoroughly, like the Grandma’s trauma of losing her husband and family members going through challenges about themselves (self-image issues, confidence, priorities, etc.) There were many articles talking about the movie bringing more awareness about mental health. It mentions that some parents thought that it was actually a good way to talk about mental health and well-being with their families. Even therapists are more thankful for the movie that Disney created. I’ve also noticed while watching the movie, how much it helps me feel like I’m not alone when family expectations become too much to bear or save the family from falling apart.

Primary: After viewing the therapist's reaction videos, there were a lot of pointers and analyses on details that the movie leaves. Where it is subtle enough to notice for adults but, at the same time, enough for children and teens to understand what the movie is trying to say.

Results/Discussions/Data Analysis:

Conclusion: (Currently in WIP)
