Study on the Point Where Pedestrians' Feelings Change

The passageway has not only "the physical function that people and things go through" but also" psychological effect of preparing and switching feelings before moving to the next space". By passing through the passageway space it is thought that people can relieve stress and spend more rich feelings. The purpose of this research is to clarify the characteristics of the space where feelings are switched when perceiving the space through the passage.

The experiments were conducted at two universities, targeting total 61students who were familiar with each campus for more than two years. The target 18 passageways were selected in the university campus. The lengths were from 25m to 135m. The experimental images were taken at equal intervals from the start point to the end point, and each frame image was continuously reproduced.

n experiment 1, the subject looked at the image through the projector, (1) evaluate overall impression by the SD method, (2) point the position at which the atmosphere was switched, and (3) selected the frame of the space left in the impression. In experiment 2, Look at the printed image of the targeted passageways in Experiment 1, (1) presented the recognition distance by Ratio method, (2) selected the passageway to pass when they want to switch feelings, and explained the reason.

As a result, the movement of natural light in the daytime and the expansion of the space illuminated by the night light remained impressions, and were effective in switching feelings. In the passage where light is inserted but there is no spatial change, the recognition distance is felt long and not much switching of feelings. In summary, the combination of light and space expansion in the direction of the ceiling and the side leads to a "little surprise" and creates an effective passageway for switching feelings.
