American Indians and Alaska Natives are the only population in the U.S. who have a legal right to health services because of the current laws in place. Yet, there is inadequate funding to meet the health needs of this special population. A timeline of legislation regarding AIAN health appears in Figure 7.2. It is important to note that if there is a full repeal of the Affordable Care Act, the Indian Health Care Improvement Act (IHCIA) would be eliminated and IHS would have funding cuts and loss of services (Burrell Institute for Health Policy and Research, 2017).
