Notes on John Greenleaf Whitter
Whittier was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts in 1807. His family were Quakers, and that religion influenced his social views and politics.
By the early 1830’s, he became an abolitionist, and his poetry reflected those views. After the Civil War, he turned to other topics. His best-known work in probably Snow Bound, published in 1866.
Whittier was also an editor, and supported many women authors of the time.
John Greenleaf Whittier died in 1892.
