Emily Dickinson was born in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1830. The Dickinson family was prominent in the area and Emily Dickinson attended schools for several years.

Dickinson was a recluse, writing around 1,800 poems in her lifetime, most of which were found after her death. Only about ten of her poems were published during her lifetime. In fact, the first book of her poetry was published four years after her death.

Her themes included nature, especially flowers and gardening, and death. One of her most famous poems is “Because I Could not Stop for Death”

Even though her work was not well-known during her lifetime, she is one of America’s most important poets.
