ENG102

Paper 1

Prompt

Write a paper with a thesis in which you choose one of the poems from the syllabus, identify a trend in the annotations left by your classmates, and assess the usefulness of these annotations in understanding the poem. The central question you are answering is how does the group of annotations you’ve identified develop, expand, and/or illuminate the meaning and significance of the poem?

To approach this question, you will need to first pick a poem and have a general sense of its meaning and significance. Next, you will need to read through the class’s annotations, look for trends and patterns, and identify one trend or pattern across several annotations that stands out to you as being important. Then, you will need to decide how this trend or pattern shapes our understanding of the meaning of the poem.

Your thesis statement for the paper will consist of two elements: first, a claim about how the trend or pattern you’ve identified in the annotations shapes our understanding of the meaning of the poem; 2. An assessment of how and why this is a significant set of ideas to consider when we read the poem.

Throughout the body of the paper you should develop this thesis by making reference to the poem itself as well as quoting from specific representative annotations and/or summarizing groups of annotations
