EMERGING WORKS IN DIVERIAN LINGUISTICS

Introduction to Diver

EMERGING WORKS IN DIVERIAN LINGUISTICS is offered as a place where scholars working within the Diverian framework can share and learn about ongoing work and exchange comments and suggestions.  It is not intended to be a base course in Diverian linguistics.  Nonetheless, the Editorial Committee recognizes and, indeed, hopes that many may come here motivated by curiosity and a desire to learn something new.  For that reason, we offer on this page some links to published works that may be useful to those who are starting “from scratch”.  These are only a beginning; there is a large body of works in the Diverian tradition now in the literature, which can be accessed by scholars at all levels.  The works suggested here, most of them written by William Diver himself, expressly address a general audience.

“The linguistics of William Diver and the Columbia School,” by Alan Huffman (2001), in WORD  52:1, 29-68.

Diver’s essays in linguistics are edited and presented by Alan Huffman and Joseph Davis in the following collection:

Language: Communication and Human Behavior.  The Linguistic Essays of William Diver (2012) Brill.

This collection contains the following papers which we recommend for beginners:

Readers are also referred to the website of the Columbia School Linguistic Society at:

www.csling.org where they can read more about Diver and his ideas, and where they will find an extensive bibliography.  Members of the Society also receive a heavy discount on purchase of books such as the above collection.
