Green-Wood Cemetery: Modern Urban Green Space
Ruth Rae
As cities around the world increase in density, cemeteries play a growing role as urban parks. Cemeteries are cultural and historical landscapes that provide nature for city residents. Green-Wood Cemetery—a national historic landmark—is expanding their public programming and botanical amenities, and increasing their role in environmental advocacy. This workshop explores the historical and modern use of cemeteries as urban green space. Participants will examine changes in the meanings of cemeteries as green space, and modern landscape management practices and techniques.
