Content Statement

The James A. Emanuel Project provides access to a portion of rarely viewed materials from the James A. Emanuel papers, 1922-2018 at the Library of Congress. As such, this website captures a wide and unfettered range of professional and personal experiences, artistic creations, and viewpoints.

The project presents these materials in order to encourage and facilitate research, awareness, teaching, and discussion. The works are presented as images (JPG) and audio (MP3) with alternative text, captions, and descriptions to support accessibility and dissemination via the Manifold platform. The materials in the Resource Collections, with the exception of “Archive Visualization by Decade,” are unedited; however, in the documentary, these materials are edited to fit within the time frame and aesthetics of the film.

Users are advised that the digital archive contains descriptions of violence, mental distress, and other trauma, as well as terms that were not usually considered inappropriate or offensive at the time but are widely considered so today. Some readers may find these descriptions and accounts dangerous or harmful.

By making available materials from the James A. Emanuel papers, 1922-2018, the project upholds the principle of equal, free access to primary sources and does not in any way convey or suggest endorsement of attitudes, perspectives, language, or behaviors depicted within the project.
