An Underline for the Underserved: A Pilot Study to Explore Simulation Research for Sustainable Aging Around Miami’s Metrorail

As population in general, and elderly population in particular, increase in metropolitan cities, quality public spaces are at a premium. While human lifespan cannot be prolonged, the period of illness and disability can be curtailed through environmental proactivity. Recent research shows that environment can reduce stress, improve cognitive function and creativity, enhance wellbeing and expedite healing. The goal of our project is to promote older adult friendly design features in the context of Miami’s Metrorail, also known as the Underline, a 10-mile paved multi-use linear trailunder the elevated train lines. A pilot study will be conducted to measure functional and environmental attributes for sustainable aging in place. One of the unique features of our project is the use of simulations to collect dynamic data using a “think aloud” protocol. We will use augmented reality and mobile sensors to help older adults visualize the design features and measure preferences, emotional responses, gait and balance.

Complementing the traditional ethnographic studies, simulation research helps us to create an iterative research design process that allows for user analysis and interventions. The project is conducted as a multidisciplinary collaboration with researchers from interior architecture, landscape architecture, physical therapy, gerontology and computer science. Our hypothesis is that simulated environmental distraction in the form of dim lighting and low traffic barriers will have a negative effect on mobility and emotional responses of older adults. The independent variables include (i) lighting levels (dim/bright/spotty) and (ii) traffic barriers (tall opaque/ tall transparent/ low) and the dependent variables include (i) mobility (gait and balance) and (ii) emotional responses (engagement, arousal, stress). The results will impact design proposals for the Underline that provides access and sustenance of public spaces, healthy lifestyle, wellness, and aging in place.
