From Sound to Signal
Alan Huffman
November, 2024
The purpose of this paper is to explore the exact nature of the relation between sound and signal, to clarify some points that have not been made explicit in previous writings, and to extend Diver’s ideas somewhat, along the lines he laid out. These points will be applied to a specific problem in the grammar of English, one which lies in the domain of what is traditionally called verbal morphology. This essay is intended as the first part of a multi-part treatise on signals and meanings in a semantic domain that may be called Degree of Probability of Questionable Occurrence. Eventual contributions to this emerging work from other authors are envisioned.
