The Future of Work? What We Can Learn from Startup Campuses, Incubators and Accelerators
Gabor Nagy (Haworth)
This is the third phase of a three-year-long study that we have undertaken to better understand the startup world and what traditional, large companies can learn from their success. In the first phase, we studied commercial coworking spaces, then in the second phase we investigated “corporate” coworking spaces, and in the third phase we have been researching how to build successful startup campuses, incubators and accelerators and why large companies are participating to drive their innovation. While such spaces have proliferated in the past few years, there has been very little research done on this topic and virtually no research on environmental design / space related concerns. This qualitative study relates to work environment design and investigates a growing trend that might define the future of work environments. During this research we have visited over a dozen of startup incubator, accelerator and campus spaces in North America, South America and Europe. Conducting open-ended interviews with multiple space users on-site, as well as observations, we have collected qualitative data on the drivers behind creating these spaces, their expected and unexpected benefits, as well as how results and performance are measured. We looked into who the users were and how the design and culture of these spaces were different from coworking spaces. We also collected success stories and lessons learned and investigated future plans and remaining challenges. While we investigated organizational / behavioral, technological / process issues, our main focus was on space-design and environmental behavior.
